SCOTT SPITS June 24, 2012
FINAL SCORE: North Melbourne 17.19 (121) Adelaide 13.11 (89)
THE WRAP: A terrific win by the Kangaoos. Their form had really dropped away after an excellent start this season and this result was one win against the odds. They've claimed a big scalp. Victory was set up with an excellent first half when the heat was on. Unsurprisingly Adelaide staged a revival in the third term and the Roos put a stop to that, too. North Melbourne clings to hope for the rest of the season.
Q4 - 27.51. GOAL. Porplyzia with a late one ....
Q4 - 20.54: GOAL. Dangerfield. Junk-time goals being picked up now as we enter time-on. Game done and dusted. Crows will lament a missed chance to grab top spot and survey the AFL landscape from there.
Q4 - 19.26: GOAL. Bastinac. Good kick from 45-degree angle.
Q4 - 17.38: GOAL. Tarrant for the Roos. A fourth for the forward. Solid 38-point lead now.
Q4 - 15.55: GOAL. Walker grabs his third for the Crows. He looks such a capable forward. So damaging at times.
Q4 - 14.17: GOAL! Petrie the mark and conversion. Definite sealer. Great win by the Roos. They'll be looking to run the game until its conclusion and grab some percentage. Crows have missed their chance to grab top spot.
Two misses by North's Hansen within a minute. Could be crucial. One would have been enough! His first chance was smothered off the boot and rushed through. More than 13 minutes of footy still to play. Crows really need six goals to nil.
Q4 - 4.59: GOAL! Quick reply from the Crows. They stay alive. Great long kick from in front by Vince. His second. Margin still gettable.
Q4 - 1.24: GOAL! Harper for the Roos. He showed some great toe and beat his man, managing to balance and split the sticks from 30 metres.
Q3 - 32.23: SIREN. An intriguing third term gives the Crows hope for the final quarter. That last settling goal from Thomas may be telling.
Q3 - 29.52: GOAL. The one the Roos wanted and desperately needed. A calm Lindsay Thomas delivered beautifully with a set shot.
Q3 - 28.01: MISS. Wells with a set shot misses to the right. That would have been very handy. Their goal drought is growing.
Q3 - 22.13: GOAL!! Vince from 40 metres. All of a sudden the deficit is just 23 points. Less than seven minutes to play in the third quarter. Extraordinary.
Past 10 minutes have been crucial. Scoring has dried up for the Roos, not having managed a score in 12 minutes. Crows are getting their share of possessions and their disposal efficiency is better. Even just one more goal before the final break will give Adelaide hope. Game on.
Q3 - 12.39: GOAL!! Crows again! Here comes the revival! Wright snares this one and the margin is down to 30 points.
Q3 - 9.50: GOAL! Back-to-back goals for the Crows. Walker impressively drilled his goal from 40 metres after a deft baulk.
Q3 - 8.18: GOAL. Sloane cuts into the margin. Good build up by the Crows. Adelaide has activated their sub with Tippett taken off (poses questions doesn't it?) and surprise sub Petrenko coming on.
Q3 - 3.27: GOAL!! Adams from directly in front for the Kangas. Biggest lead of the game so far, nearing the magical 50-point margin.
Q3 - 1.54: GOAL. Walker with the quick reply. Can the Crows continue to slowly eat into the lead?
Q3 - 0.22: GOAL! Great start to the term for the Roos. Harvey delivers. Lead out to 47 points!
HALF-TIME: North Melbourne 10.10 (70) Adelaide 4.5 (29)
The match is fascinatingly poised. Kangas have been fantastic across the half but the Crows finally found their feet late in the quarter. Roos have had 15 more inside 50s for the game so that imbalance will need to be redressed. On a fast track at the Docklands Adelaide can slowly bridge the gap across the second half.
FINAL: Melbourne 20.15 (135) GWS 9.3 (57)
That's the ball game. A great result for Melbourne. A defeat would have been another knock on the club this year. They withstood the early Giants assault and kept their eyes on the ball (figuratively speaking).
Melbourne 20.15 (135) GWS 9.3 (57) - Q4 26.38
Dying minutes of this match. Sting has gone out of the game. Scully still getting booed each time he goes anywhere near the ball. Nathan Jones looking for BOG honours.
North Melbourne 10.10 (70) Adelaide 4.5 (29) - Q2 23.10
Crows have stemmed the bleeding in the past 10 minutes. They've began to restore the balance on the possession count. Dangerfield starting to have an impact.
Melbourne 18.12 (120) GWS 8.3 (51) - Q4 14.44
Giants with the only two goals of the final quarter. They've broken even on many stats measures this quarter. The massive third term discrepancy was indicative of what can happen with developing teams.
North Melbourne 9.8 (62) Adelaide 3.3 (21) - Q2 14.56
Who saw this coming? Kangas having a day out. Tarrant with three goals. Bastinac (14), Adams (12), Wells (12) and Atley (12) dominating through the middle. The overall possessions discrepancy is 53. Wow-wee.
North Melbourne 7.7 (49) Adelaide 3.3 (21) - Q2 7.22
Roos with the first and only goal of the second quarter so far to advance to a 28-point lead. They are blitzing on overall disposals with 41 more already. Crows badly need an injection of confidence ... and quickly.
3QT: Melbourne 18.8 (116) GWS 6.2 (38)
A scoreless quarter for the Giants. Melbourne's 7.4 was a confidence-boosting period for a club that has managed just one to date. Watts having an impressive game with 24 possessions (including seven contested), six marks and three inside 50s.
QT: North Melbourne 6.6 (42) Adelaide 3.2 (20)
Late goals to the Roos gives them the ascendancy. Tarrant with two. Leigh Adams gathered 10 disposals. Kangas have thrown down the gauntlet early.
North Melbourne 4.5 (29) Adelaide 3.2 (20) - Q1 28.05
Roos having an impressive quarter. They are ahead on disposals and Inside 50s. Leigh Adams the top disposal winner thus far with nine.
Melbourne 16.5 (101) GWS 6.2 (38) - Q3 17.21
Demons absolutely dominating now. They've booted six goals this quarter and lead by more than 10 goals. At one point in this match it was 31 points each .... so long ago.
North Melbourne 2.4 (16) Adelaide 2.2 (14) - Q1 20.26
Even match so far at the Docklands. All single goal-scorers to this point.
Melbourne 14.5 (89) GWS 6.2 (38) - Q3 11.44
Three quick goals to the Demons. They've officially broken the young Giants now. Loss of Clark quickly forgotten as Davey and Garland look dangerous up forward.
Melbourne 11.5 (71) GWS 6.2 (38) - Q3 5.28
Clark subbed out for the Demons. Extent of his injury/injuries is unclear but Melboure might just be exercising extreme caution on the big forward.
North Melbourne 0.1 (1) Adelaide 1.0 (6) - Q1 8.41
Callinan the solitary goalscorer so far. A little surprising to see Petrenko start the game as the substitute.
INJURY WATCH: Mitch Clark will be assessed further after half-time. The big forward went off in the second quarter and Mark Neeld indicated that he'll be guided by the club's medical staff.
North Melbourne 0.0 (0) Adelaide 0.0 (0) - Q1 3.08
Neither side has scored under three minutes of play at the Docklands.
4.37pm - Only minutes away from the start of the North Melbourne-Adelaide match. Liam Anthony, Lachlan Hansen, Ben Cunnington will start on the bench for the Roos, with Sam Gibson the substitute. Adelaide has Jared Petrenko wearing the vest with Matthew Jaensch, Shaun McKernan, Jason Porplyzia starting on the pine.
HALF-TIME: Melbourne 11.4 (70) Greater Western Sydney 6.2 (38)
ANALYSIS: Melbourne has slowly worked their way to the front in this match. Hard nuts Jones and Brown are leading the way as the Demons dominate the contested possessions to half-time. They are also well in front on the tackle count. Clark is a focal point up forward with four goals but each of those came in the first quarter when the heat was on.
Q2 - 26.01: GOAL!! Garland gets on the board and Melbourne improves lead to 22 points late in the second quarter.
Q2 - 24.59: GOAL! Howe for Melbourne with a tough kick from an angle.
Q2 - 20.32: GOAL!! Giants with their first of the quarter. Cameron slots his goal from 45 metres.
Q2 - 15.46: GOAL. Demons end the mini goal drought with Jamar booting truly from the pocket. Lead out to four goals with Melbourne much more composed this quarter.
Giants winning the clearances by midway through the second quarter. Clark the equal leading possession winner for the Demons, alongside Nathan Jones. Adams and Scully with 11 touches for GWS. Scully has been slowed this term after closer attention from his former teammates.
Q2 - 4.24: GOAL!! Sylvia pounces on the bouncing ball in the forward 50, puts on the after-burners and converts with a checkside kick on the run.
Q2 - 3.25: GOAL. Trengove. Demons warming up now. Goal assist came from a wonderfully weighted kick from Watts on the flank. Melbourne lead by 11 points.
ANALYSIS: Without Clark's impact the Demons could be staring down a tough day. The forward has been a great target for Melbourne. Scully seems hell-bent on making an impact against his former club and is racking up the touches early.
Q1 - 32.07: GOAL!! Clark's fourth. The former Lion could be eyeing off double figures today. Melbourne back in front.
Q1 - 28.54: GOAL!! Clark ready for a day out with his third goal. Scores level again. Demons have worked their way back and now are having the better of the play.
Experienced Giants Ward and Scully getting plenty of touches. Interestingly Melbourne already with 11 more tackles than the Giants. Demons could be chasing tail against the pacy GWS outfit.
Q1 - 25.38: GOAL! Clark with two for Melbourne. No doubt about the kick ...
Q1 - 23.09: GOAL!! Adams surges to score for GWS. Lead out to 13 points. Giants showing their pace around the packs so far.
Q1 - 20.55: GOAL. Big Patton for GWS. They extend their lead to seven points. Demons have a contest on their hands today. Lovely long kick from the No.1 pick.
Q1 - 17.03: GOAL! Giants back in front! Wilson with two goals. High-scoring affair on the cards
Q1 - 11.24: GOAL. Melbourne with three in four minutes. Rivers picks up his second. Dees in front for the first time
Q1 - 9.56: GOAL. Demons find their groove. Clark boots a beauty from nearly 50 metres. He's having an impressive season. Melbourne 2.0 (12) Greater Western Sydney 2.1 (13)
Q1 - 8.01: GOAL. Demons on the board. They settle. Rivers roosts a major from beyond 50 metres. Dees supporters breathe easier again ....
Q1 - 4.08: GOAL!! Giants with the first two. Wilson gets his foot to the ball in the square and the ball crosses the line, narrowly missing the goal post. Umpires call for a review and the goal is ratified. Hot start by the Giants.
Q1 - 1.32: GOAL! Giants snag the opener. Greene gives GWS a six-point lead.
Q1 - 0.20: We're underway. Scully gets a quick possession after the opening bounce and a chorus of boos ring across the ground.
2.40pm - Melbourne has made one change for today's game at the MCG. Rohan Bail is out, replaced by Sam Blease. Blease is the substitute, with Matthew Bate, Jordan McKenzie and Lynden Dunn to start on the bench for the Demons. Luke Power will be wearing the vest for the Giants with Tomas Bugg, Jonathan Giles and Devon Smith to start on the pine.
