A tiger that escaped from its enclosure at the Cologne zoo has been shot dead after it killed its keeper, police say.
The tiger managed to escape from its enclosure on Saturday to an adjacent building. It was shot dead by the zoo director.
The 43-year-old keeper was so severely mauled that she died shortly after in hospital.
"Today is the darkest day of my life," said zoo director Theo Pagel after the attack. He said that visitors were at no point in danger.
After the incident, a part of the zoo was closed as the police took visitors and staff to safety, a spokesman said.
