RACE OF THE DAY

AUSTRALIAN DERBY

It’s a race steeped in history, but it’s a tough gig having to follow the Golden Slipper.

This week it’s the three-year-olds' turn to show us what they’re made of, and there is a fair chance race favourite Laser Hawk will follow on from his win in the Rosehill Guineas with another strong performance here.

The two New Zealand horses that finished behind him two weeks ago – Ocean Park and Silent Achiever – get another run at Gai Waterhouse’s star stayer today.

Ocean Park was to be spelled but after his enormous effort in the Guineas he’ll get his chance today, while Silent Achiever returns to 2400 metres, a journey she’s a group 1 winner over.

Polish Knight comes into consideration after his outstanding run to win the Tulloch Stakes last weekend. While the form around him doesn’t appear to stand up, Polish Knight ran great sectionals and produced a true staying effort to win. Another performance like that and it could be consecutive win over consecutive weeks.

Hoylonny ran outstanding to finish sixth in the Rosehill Guineas, making ground on all the leaders, including Laser Hawk. The extra trip today could work in his favour and surprise at odds.

BET OF THE DAY

RASPBERRIES

It’s a hard, hard day on the bet today, with plenty of favourites and some wide open races to finish the day.

Ichihara should win, Rain Affair and Foxwedge are both too short, as is Atlantic Jewel in the Sapphire Stakes, although she will be far too good.

So Know Your Nags has tried to find some value. While there are plenty of chances in the last race at Randwick today, Raspberries was impressive when an unlucky third in the group 2 Sunline Stakes at Moonee Valley last start.

She’s down in class and weight today and can collect the chocolates, although you’d expect she’ll need some luck.

LAY DOWN YOUR LOBSTER

How to spend $20 on today’s races:

$5 EACH WAY, Randwick, race nine, No.9, Raspberries - Loves racing over the mile, and with not much inside of her wanting to lead she shouldn’t have too much trouble getting across and finding a nice pocket to settle. Lonhro mare bred to win these types of races.

$5 PLACE, Randwick, race six, No.3, Mid Summer Music - Will be much fitter after her first-up run behind Foxwedge and Hay List in the group1 William Reid. Before that finished three-lengths third behind Black Caviar. Has a strong second-up record in what appears to be a race for second behing Atlantic Jewel.

$5 WIN, Flemington, race four, No.3, Platelet - A winner at group level, Platelet returns to racing today after a lengthy lay-off. Slugged with plenty of weight but appears well placed here for a tilt at the prizemoney. Canberra’s Not A Dancer looms as a big threat.

LAST WEEK'S COLLECT: $31.

2012 COLLECT: $384.
