The future's bright … Megan Gale shows off her sophisticated swimwear range, Isola. Photo: Simon Alekna
Supermodel, swimwear designer, style icon and, believe it or not, your typical girl next door, Megan Gale wears many hats. Also known as ''the Amazon'', Gale may always look good in a bikini but the trick is she knows how to make other women look good in them, too.
What inspired the creation of your swimwear line, Isola?
Ultimately, I wanted to create a chic, sophisticated, fashion forward swimwear range geared mainly towards women in their 30s and 40s that still has a sexiness about it.
Where's the name from?
Isola (pronounced ''is - oh - la'' ) means ''island'' in Italian. I wanted something that sounded exotic and that epitomised an idyllic summer destination. I adore visiting islands and some of my favourites are in Italy - Sardinia, Capri, Ischia, Ponza and the Aeolian Islands.
What's your design philosophy?
The cut and fit are the main focus. A swimsuit can look great in campaigns and magazines but if it doesn't t fit properly or falls apart after one season, you won't sell too many. Following trends, picking colours and prints and the right trims; that's the easy part.
What makes a perfect swimsuit?
Something that's flattering on the bust and the butt!
Are you a one-piece or bikini gal?
I lean slightly more towards a bikini, but I like wearing one-pieces every now and then. It's great to see them make a comeback in recent seasons.
Tell us about the summer collection …
It's inspired by the vibrant sights and sounds of Mexico and the coastal town of Puerto Vallarta. Bright pop colours such as coral, turquoise and canary yellow feature, as do classics like navy and black. As florals are very much on trend there are various takes including vintage pastels and hand-painted bloom effects. The entire range comes as separates, allowing customers to mix and match colours with prints and more importantly to get the sizing perfect for their body.
I like to keep it simple - I don't over-accessorise or dress too loud. I like clean lines, so nothing too floaty or voluminous. Anything that fits the sexy, chic, sophisticated brief I will definitely gravitate towards, especially for the red carpet. When I'm not working I like a bit of an edgy, rock chick look - skinny jeans, leather pants, sharp jackets with a vintage T-shirt.
Whose style do you admire?
There are a lot of people whose style I admire, but I don't think their style is necessarily fashionable and on trend, or for me. For example, I greatly admire and respect the statements that Lady Gaga makes, as kooky as they are, because she is fearless and boldly expresses herself. I would LOVE to be that directional and fearless with fashion. Whether you like her style or not, I think you've got to give the girl credit for being an individual and walking to the beat of her own drum.
What three things couldn't you survive without?
Love, laughter and sunshine. Sounds corny, but try to imagine a sad, hateful world with a darkened sky. No thanks!
What's your favourite place in the world?
Apart from the two obvious, Australia and my second home Italy, I have to say Tahiti. I was lucky enough to spend a month there and I fell in love with the place. Maybe it had something to do with my Polynesian heritage but I just felt like I belonged. I ate fresh fish, drank coconut juice and ran around barefoot in a bikini with flowers in my hair and shell necklaces around my neck.
