The Tuggeranong Vikings were four minutes from a massive upset over ANU in women's Capital League one at Tuggeranong yesterday.
The Vikings led the students with minutes to go when the table-topping ANU equalised to end the contest 1-1.
Peta McKinnon put the sixth-placed underdogs in front with 10 minutes left on the clock, before Shelley Watson saved the top side some blushes with her leveller.
Tuggeranong coach Terry Evans says his side needs to take the next step and start winning such games.
He felt the Vikings created enough chances to take all three points and it was now time for his team to learn how to win tight games against good sides.
He thought Tuggeranong became too defensive in the dying minutes, inviting pressure from ANU.
''We don't want to be content with competing,'' Evans said.
''We want to start to win some of these games.''
With second-placed St Patrick's having the bye, ANU moves three points clear at the top of the ladder.
Meanwhile, Old Canberrans thumped Wests Valleys 12-0 to move level with St Pat's on points but second on the ladder with an inferior goal difference - despite the big haul.
RESULTS: ANU 1 (Shelley Watson) drew Tuggeranong Vikings 1 (Peta McKinnon); Old Canberrans 12 (Kate Gilmore 4, Catriona Bailey-Price 2, Stephanie Andrews, Chloe Montgomery, Courtney Weiss, Erin Cooper, Jennifer Day, Abbey Cambridge) bt Wests Valleys 0; Uni of Canberra 3 (Toni Stewart 2, Edwina Bone) bt United 1 (Kathryn McInerney); Central 4 bt North Canberra's (Kelby Pointon).
