A man has died at a popular surf beach in Torquay today.
Police said it was unclear whether the man, believed to be 18, experienced difficulties in the water or whether he collapsed on Torquay back beach from a medical condition.
Emergency services were called to The Esplanade adjacent to the beach at 11.20am to reports that the man had got into trouble in the water and had fallen unconscious, Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said.
Paramedics arrived and tried to revive him, while and ambulance helicopter landed at the site to transport him to hospital. However the man died on the beach.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the victim was at the beach with two friends at the time.
"Police will await the results of a post mortem to establish the exact cause of death however it does not appear suspicious at this stage," she said.
